What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made from porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. Dentists often use them to change how a tooth looks. They are commonly chosen for chipped or broken teeth, teeth with gaps between them, stained teeth, and teeth that are crooked or out of line.

What happens during porcelain veneer treatment?

Veneer treatment usually takes two office visits. Here is what most patients can expect.

Visit one: preparing your teeth

At the first visit, your dentist removes a very small amount of enamel from the front of each tooth being treated. This makes room so the veneer can sit flush with the rest of your teeth. Your dentist then takes an impression of your teeth. This impression, or digital scan, is used to make your veneers.

Our office uses high-resolution digital imaging, which improves accuracy while using less radiation than traditional film x-rays. We also use a Cerec machine, a CT scan, a diode laser, and Itero digital scanning technology, which can help with planning and fit.

Between visits

While your veneers are being made, you will wear temporary coverings on the prepared teeth if your dentist recommends them. Your team will explain how to care for those temporary pieces until your next visit.

Visit two: bonding your veneers

At the second visit, your dentist checks the fit and color of each veneer. Once you and your dentist are satisfied with how they look and feel, the veneer is bonded to the tooth. Your dentist will then check your bite and make any final adjustments.

What is recovery like after veneers?

Most patients find that their teeth and gums adjust quickly after bonding. Some sensitivity to hot or cold can happen after enamel is prepared, and it usually fades. Tell your dentist if you have discomfort that does not improve, because it may need attention.

To help your veneers last, most dentists recommend the same care you would give natural teeth:

• Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily
• Keep up with regular dental cleanings and checkups
• Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects like ice
• Tell your dentist if you grind or clench your teeth, since this can stress veneers
